Bubble Wrap for the Fragile

Obviously, the homeless are a fragile lot, a factwhich the Government of Delhi understands so well that just before the winterfreeze set in, the Government decided to distribute bubble wraps instead ofblankets to the homeless in Delhi.

Historically bubble wrap has been used to wrapfragile goods amongst other things (now the homeless) but wrapping the poor andhomeless in bubble wraps was definitely a stroke of genius.

‘Ingenious ‘I am sure were the words that did the rounds in theMinistry, some one surely was also promoted and was even given a year’s bonusfor his/her master class decision. Obviously bubble wrap was a wise economicdecision, costing just 25 per sheet, it did save the government a lot of money.

The government justifying its stance claimed that thehanding out the blankets was of no use as the poor drug addicts sold the saidblankets for money, this coming from a government which very recently informedthe Apex Court that “ we have closed downa lot of shelters in Delhi as there aren’t too many takers’?” A governmentthat obviously lives in a wee bubble,wherein not only are there no homeless in Delhi, but also they definitely needno shelter!!

One just has to leave the confines of theircomfortable homes and step out to see the plight of the homeless, people livingby garbage disposal units burning garbage to keep them warm, inhaling fumesworse than those released from the confines of the Union Carbide Factory inBhopal.

The homeless, yes! Are a fragile lot but they needshelters and blankets instead of bubble wraps, they need a sensitivegovernment, not one that blatantly rapes its citizens to fill its coffers.

It was in December when we were shooting in Old Delhi, near Jama Masjid that LZ and i spotted this boy with crazy blue eyes on a cycle rickshaw. We both were awestruck by his face and his eyes. We both wanted to shoot him, but couldn't coz we were in our car and stuck in a jam.
As time passéd that moment was forgotten, till yesterday, we chanced upon the boy again. LZ did shoot him yesterday through the box camera, but i need to go back there and shoot him.

A cold yet lazy Sunday being spent in my study.
Working with LZ on a Canadian documentary on homeless children in Delhi, and its heart wrenching.
The actual shoot is mid jan but we have been spending the past few days meeting NGO's and visiting shelters. Honestly its really really sad to see the plight of the poor and homeless in Delhi.
Came back from my shoot last evening and broke down.

So i am finally back, a week in the forests of Naurangiya and decently refreshed i am back to reality.

To be honest its been a good trip. Even though i partially shot star strails i am a wee bit disappointed with the results.
I have no one but me to blame ( lets not discount the dew). Even though i knew dew would be a factor, i did believe i could counter the same. But then again nature is much stronger than a man's will and i was beaten hands down.
The result i could never expose the sensor for more than 24 mins.
And the only time i did (65mins) the dew destroyed the exposure.

So got back to Delhi yesterday, the drive this time around was quite smooth. However my stiff shoulder doesn't seem to be holding up too well. Honestly if it comes down to another surgery, not sure ill be able to handle it.

The show must go on, a shining India is nothing but a paradox. A society so desperate to break free from the self imposed shackles that its lost in the very abyss created by the cultural conflicts its extremely proud off.

Like a movie shot in grainy monochrome suddenly gone HD in Technicolor we are a desperate lot, striving to compete with the West as we understand it.

Its no longer about the Maharajas and the elephants, but about the Tommy Hilfiger’s and the Nike’s.

A never-ending competition, a never-ending battle, the shining Indian middle class single handedly constantly strives to take on the west.

The opening of the economy in the early 90’s brought with it a rainbow, like the breaking down of the Berlin wall and the collapse of the erstwhile Soviet Union, the Indian middle class rose to dizzy heights of confusion and abysmal lack of identity.

Who are we? Really? An English speaking colonially hung over society? The Raj might have been passé but the Raj within is still very much alive.

We are proud of our culture, we are proud of our Kamasutra but we are ashamed of acknowledging that sex is not just for procreation.

The Indian middle class no longer serenades around trees and flowers don’t mysteriously appear when lovers decide to lock lips. We are now bashful, proud and horny.The Average Indian middle class male is the new Sex God, the potbelly is the new six-pack and we are proud of it.

The Indian middle class has been taught that slavery was abolished by Gandhi but ironically its now enslaved by the Corporates that suck the very life out of it.

In the process we are now a culturally displaced society, so alien are our very own cultures that Gandhi could have been a pot smoking rock star playing B minor at 4 consecutive concerts and no one would have known. After all Che Gruvera wasn’t a revolutionary, but a Tee sold in Lajpat Nagar for 100 rupees.

Strange times these, we strive, but for what? Tighter fitting skinnes?

Virtues are only for the farmers committing suicide down south, all while the Indian middle class ‘shines’.

Children no longer play in parks, families no longer dine at neighborhood Udipis and Mc Donald’s is the new Roti. We are the new middle class!!

We are a beautiful lot, so obsessed with fairness creams that the entire Somalian per capita income is spent by a single middle class family to achieve the ultimate goal of fairness.

We are after all a very fair society, where the ever-struggling middle class bridges the gap between the rich and the poor.

We are also a society deep in debt, while the poor struggle to feed the many mouths they created, the middle class struggles to pay off its credit card bills which reached astronomical heights trading Rotis, with Pizzas and dhotis with jeans.

We all roll are R’s and Arnold replaced Hanuman once Terminator 3 hit theaters.

Christmas is the new Diwali and Valentine’s Day is the only way the middle class is capable of expressing its love.

Also Wine is nothing but stale grape juice and beer is the new milk.

Whatever happened to the 70’s and the 80’s? Whatever happened to the hard working middle class striving for comforts and not enslaved by luxuries.

Whatever happened to the good ol’ Roti? A middle class that dined out once a month, and ate meat only to celebrate an unforgettable occasion?

A middle class that was proud of its virtues, a middle class that taught its children never to waste food. A middle class that could afford to buy its children toys only on their birthdays?

Gone are the days when the middle class proudly spent 5 rupees on a haircut and a shave only on a Sunday at a neighborhood saloon and pedicures and manicures were for aliens from a distant Galaxy some 37 light years from earth.

Gone are the days when Lux was the only soap and Nirma detergent was the color of India.

Gone are the days when Lord Ram had the power to bring an entire nation to a stand still for an entire hour every Sunday morning.

The middle class is now a pretentious rebellious mob, everything is “cool” and everyone is a “dude”. Where Anna is the new Gandhi and fighting Corruption is the new freedom struggle only because it has the potential to get you laid!

The Taj Mahal is no longer a symbol of love but a gimmick to rape the pockets of the West.

I do believe in signs.. and just 3 weeks after Lana took me under her wings to shoot documentaries, i found a 1968 Canon super 8 film camera at a garage giveaway.
I picked it up in a jiffy and spent the last 2 hours restoring it and lo behold it bloody works.
The funny bit, it still had batteries from the 60's

I wonder where i am headed, i am asked time and again, what i am doing with my life and where i want to end up.
Answers to which i don't seem to have, yes i am a qualified lawyer, who doesn't want to practice law, and people find it hard to believe.
Yes i want to be a photographer and yes i have a lot to learn, which i am, and thankfully i do have some work coming in and i am sure if i do work hard this will work out too.

Also on a more important note, its pertinent to point out that i am sucker for hell and torture, years after leaving the ex boss i once again heeded to her calls to help her with stuff till DEcember and i am regretting the move and how.
If only she knew how much i hate her...

Glad to be working out again, this time it was really tough to pick my lazy arse and hit the treadmill. But after much procrastination i finally did it yesterday. Super glad about it.
